The next night Rich and I headed out for dinner. I knew it seemed silly, but after my dinner with Dan and the kids the night before, I wanted a do-over celebration, and I was happy people wanted to join me.
âWhere are we meeting everyone?â I said as we exited the building.
âOh, itâll just be us,â he said. âLines were crossed and tonight didnât work for the others.â He winked and my stomach did somersaults and then felt punched with guilt. I knew it was wrong, but the thought of being alone with him warmed my body.
We got into his driverâs Cadillac Escalade. âLouie, Nobu tonight,â Rich said. It was my favorite sushi restaurant in the city.
When we arrived, the hostess, without asking our name, seated us at a table for two in the back corner of the room. The overhead lights were dimmed, and small votive candles burned around a vase of white roses. The sommelier arrived with a bottle of Cristal and we raised our glasses. âFor all youâve done,â Rich toasted, âand for all weâll do together.â His hazel eyes locked on me like lasers.
The server came with menus, and Rich brushed them away. âWe donât need those,â he said, smiling at me. âYour job is to enjoy yourself. Iâll take care of everything.â
I sat back, drank champagne, and watched Rich order. He didnât have to ask me what I wanted; after all the years of client dinners, he knew.
Within moments our first course arrivedâtuna and salmon served in chilled silver dishes, garnished with white orchids. The server left and the plate sat waiting. Nobodyâs little hands grabbed for it, I didnât have to cut anything for anyone. It was just mine.
I placed a piece of tuna in my mouth, the sauce so flavorful that my taste buds ached. I started to reach for my second piece while I chewed the first, and then I put my chopsticks down, not wanting to rush a single moment. After all, I didnât have to.
âIs everything all right?â Rich said.
âYes, itâs amazing.â We talked about the day and laughed about something that had happened in a meeting. We shared so many inside jokes. Being with him was so easy; there was never anything to explain.
After dinner ended, we headed to the lounge where Rich grabbed us a couch in the corner of the room. He ordered another bottle and I got up to use the ladiesâ room. A small table sat in front of us, and after all the wine, I wobbled on my high heels as I brushed past Rich. Then I felt a shock through my stomach and down my legs as he pulled me onto his lap.
âDonât you see?â he said into my ear. âNow we can be together.â The lounge was dark, and the people around us were just smoky silhouettes. My little black dress had ridden up, exposing my bare thighs. Richâs fingers feathered along them, his touch so delicate and light. I didnât know what this was, but I didnât want it to end.
